Welcome to The Village Oak Tree

I am your host, Terrance Ó Domhnaill.
Here we are, a week and a half into the new U.S. presidency and as predicted, the chaos has begun around the world.

This week, I want to talk about why I think Trump is stopping all foreign aid, except to Israel and Egypt, pulling out of the WHO, and many other cutbacks.

I will give you a hint. He needs that money for his other projects, which I will get into.
So, come sit you down next to someplace warm and let me tell you a little of what the media isn't telling you.

Let me start with some of the things Trump has done in the last few days and what he's saying he will do shortly.

One of the most impactful for the world at large, is pulling the funding for the World Health Organisation. The U.S. supplied one fifth of the funding for this UN group and, as of 2026, the U.S. will be gone. I'm sure he has cut any future 2025 funding at this point as well, much to the outrage to health and NGOs' everywhere.
This affects health and health science entities around the world. Including right at home in the U.S.

He put out a communications gag order on the U.S. health department, which has stopped important research for the time being. I'm sure that there is some federal funding that is now stripped away as well.

He has shut off all foreign aid to every country in the world, except Israel and Egypt. We all know why he made Israel an exception but Egypt?
It turns out that Trump needs Egypt to hold the line at the Gaza southern border, so he will continue to make Egypt happy, which makes Israel happy, which makes Miriam Adelson happy. More on Egypt in a minute.

The question on a lot of people's minds right now, is what will Trump do when Israel decides to scrap the ceasefire and go back to ethnically cleansing Palestinians? I mean, Trump even hinted at supporting this in one of his many chats with the press.
He has already told the press and the Europeans, that all he cares about is getting Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table. After that, it's Europe's problem.
I expect he will do the same for Israel and Hamas. It's their problem.

Trump is also threatening NATO with the pullout of approximately 20,000 troops in order to coerce the EU to do more for their own defences.

So let's talk about the why. I am sure that some bright independent journalist making a lot of money will figure this out, and may already have. I just haven't found the story yet.

But it doesn't take a lot thinking to put two and two together. First thing to make plain. For Trump to accomplish everything on his wish list, he needs lots of money. Billions as a matter of fact.

The United States treasury doesn't have any. Congress last fall, told Trump and Musk that, no, they would not raise the debt ceiling, or in their case, do away with it all together, which is what the dynamic duo asked for.
Since there's no extra money to be had, they have to shift it over from other sources. Such as the World Health Organisation, the green deal initiatives, foreign aid and any other program that they can get away with defunding.

All of that now, repurposed money is going to be spent on sending active duty troops to the southern border, rounding up immigrants from everywhere, and trying to buy Greenland without starting a war with Denmark and Greenland or the EU for that matter, as that would trigger an article 5 intervention by NATO against any American troop invasion of Greenland.

As it stands right now, elements of the 82nd Airborne Division, the 10th Mountain Division, the 4th Infantry division, and the 7th Marines have been put on ready orders for possible deployment to Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, and to San Diego, CA to assist with securing the border and to finish erecting the border wall. About 1500 troops in all to start with.

This on top of the already 2500 deployed National Guard and federal reserve units there now. With the possible call up of more in the future. As I said last week, so much for federal law regarding the deployment of active duty troops on U.S. soil.
With regard to ICE roundups, there may be some troop movements in the future there also. Ice has been given dispensation to collect immigrants no matter where they are. There are no more sanctuaries period. Schools, churches, sanctuary cities and so on are now all fair game.

Then there is the new Laken Riley law going into effect. Anyone who fits the profile of a possible illegal immigrant can be deported on the suspicion of committing a crime, no matter how trivial. Anything from a traffic stop and shop lifting, to bigger things.

How many people are going to end up in these new detention slash concentration camps soon? How many American citizens will be profiled and taken into custody, and maybe even deported as the frenzy takes hold? There's a story out about an ICE raid on a warehouse in Newark, New jersey last week. It turns out that one of those arrested was an American citizen and a U.S. military veteran.

All it will take now is an anonymous phone call, a finger pointing or any other method of outing for someone to get a visit from the police or ICE, then be immediately detained until they can prove their innocence of a crime or their legal right to be in the country.

How is this not reminiscent of the Nazi purges of the undesirables in 1930's Germany?

This is what Trump needs all of that tax money for. Active duty troop deployments, finishing the wall, extra personnel to run around the country detaining thousands of people, and the building of concentration camps to keep them in until they can be put on a plane to somewhere, anywhere but in the United States. It doesn't matter to Trump what happens to them once they're in the camps and eventually deported.
And if a country says they won't take them back, he'll find a way to make them take their people back. Again, he doesn't care if he creates a humanitarian crisis in any other country. That's their problem, according to him.

The sanctions have already started. When Colombia refused to take in a couple plane loads of deportees, last weekend, he threatened to sanction the crap out of everybody in the country. He imposed an emergency 25% tariff effective immediately, and another 25% to start next week. He sanctioned government leaders, revoked visas and promised more. This is what any country can expect from now on if they defy the mafia don.

To put this in perspective for the average American consumer, Colombia exports crude oil, coffee, cut flowers, vegetables, gold and other precious metals. I don't think the loss of Colombian oil or gold will have much of an effect on the average American or European, but coffee? You can bet these tariffs will raise the price of your morning coffee by quite a bit if these sanctions last any length of time. Maybe these countries need to find other trade markets soon to stay afloat. I said this about Canada last week. Maybe the BRICS alliance can help? I mean, Brazil is not that far away and they are a founding BRICS member. Just sayin'.

In another note, Colombia capitulated the next day but you can see where all of this is going.

Some countries have agreed to stay on his good side and accept their people back, like India. But others, not so much. Nicaragua and Honduras have said they can't afford to take their people back. Venezuela also said something to that effect. So, it will be quite the show to watch as these countries try to stand up to the mafia don. Will Colombia's example be enough to bring them all in line to do the Cappo's bidding?

Meanwhile, the people rounded up by ICE and the police will be languishing in concentration camps in the deserts and back country areas of Texas, Arizona and maybe, California. I say maybe California because the state governor wants to put up a fight. Another show that will be worth watching.

Add to that this new idea of sending upwards of 30,000 or more deportees to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to the Navy base there, where all of the not POW's from the war on terror are imprisoned. They're still talking about it. Cuba is objecting but, as we know, the U.S. doesn't care about them. They’ve been under crushing economic sanctions for over seventy years with no sign of a letup.

There have been other states governors and states Attorney Generals who have said to the press that they will stand up to Trump. I wonder how long they'll last when Trump takes away their federal funding or sends in federal troops under the insurrection act?
Trump has told some people in North Carolina last week that FEMA should just be done away with. That the states should take care of their weather disasters on their own and apply to be reimbursed afterwards. With Trump in charge of federal disaster relief, you can see how that would go. Any state that tries to stand up to the mafioso, would have funds denied.

I read somewhere last week, that some prominent people in California are talking about secession again. Does California have enough resources to go it on their own? Once upon a time, that answer would have been a yes. Now, after years of droughts and fires, I don't know. I read another story that California wants to put it in a referendum vote for 2028. That gives them four years to drum up enough support. Won't that set off the MAGA republicans. According to this article I read, California's GDP by itself is 3.8% That's pretty huge for this large state. What if coastal Oregon and Washington state joined in?

If they were to try it now, Trump would pull an Abraham Lincoln and send federal troops in to quell the ‘insurrection’. But if the democrats take back the government in 2028? We can only hope someone in the democratic party starts to step up soon. Time is running out.

So let's talk about the other elephant in the room. Greenland. A couple of weeks ago, Trump called the Danish Prime Minister and apparently tried very hard to muscle her into selling him Greenland. They were on the phone for forty-five minutes, according to a couple of news sources. She was very upset and this is sending shock waves across western Europe. Now the Danes are planning on spending billions to defend Greenland from invaders. They don't have much in the way of military assets but they're not taking any chances on Trump.

This is the other reason Trump needs a lot of money. Greenland won't go cheaply. Definitely not for the same paltry sum that Seward negotiated with the Russians in order to purchase Alaska.

As it stands right now, both the Danish and Greenlandic governments have given Trump a very emphatic no. One minister even telling Trump to fuck off in his parliament speech. As it stands now, the Danes have drummed up support from other EU nations to stand up to the U.S. France is offering troops to assist the Danes to bolster the defences in Greenland. Will this stand if Trump threatens everyone with tariff's again? That threat is starting to take a dark turn now.

In some other news regarding U.S. imperial expansionism from last Saturday, Trump told reporters on Air Force 1, that he is working with Egypt and Jordan to accept thousands, or more, Palestinian refugees from Gaza because there's no longer anywhere for them to live anymore. He told reporters that the place was totally destroyed and he's trying to help.

For anyone who's been watching the 21st century holocaust taking place in Gaza for the last fifteen months, we're crying bullshit. Israel tried this maneuver back at the start of this genocide and the idea was rejected by both countries back then. This would have been about November or so in 2023.

The countries leaders, King Abdullah of Jordan and President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt told Israel and the U.S. back then, they didn't have the ability to take in a couple million Palestinians who Israel wanted to forcibly remove from Palestine. They already had thousands of Palestinians in their countries from previous wars in Gaza and were barely managing them as it was.

Of course, we now know this is Trump's MO. When he decides he wants something, he first tries to bully a country into submitting to him with a phone call. When that doesn't work, he sends one of his mafia goons to that country to let them know that he's not happy and that they had better comply or he'll punish them somehow. Why do you think the new Secretary of State is making the rounds of south America right now, starting in Venezuela?

In Egypt's case, using the foreign aid as an inducement is just the start. If Trump threatens to take it away, which he probably has, he's hoping that this will scare Egypt into giving him what he wants. In the case for Jordan, he probably threatened Jordan with the removal of the U.S. military and their equipment, which would put Jordan at the mercy of some opposition groups who want to get rid of the monarchy. Imagine Jordan undergoing a civil war and ending up like Syria? Both countries have said no but, will they capitulate soon under duress?

There are some regional countries who are against this. Saudi Arabia, for one, Iran, Iraq and the other gulf state countries who are all afraid of some extremists taking over either one of or both, Egypt and Jordan. That would be too close to home and they'll try to prevent that.

The only reason Trump wants to get rid of the Palestinians from Gaza, is money. Israel wants the natural resources under and offshore of Gaza. Mainly the oil. Trump wants access to the potential sea side resort real estate for his rich investor friends. That and possible lucrative U.S. oil corporation contracts with Israel once the Palestinians have all been removed.

With the international court system and the U.N. being powerless to stop them, what's a little ethnic cleansing between friends? Israel gets its wish of a greater Israel and the U.S., or Trump in this case, makes a lot more money for himself. A win-win for both parties.

How far is Trump willing to go to get what he wants? That remains to be seen. His attempt to end birthright citizenship was temporarily blocked by a conservative federal judge for being unconstitutional. I mean, we do have a fourteenth amendment and no one thinks that Trump and his MAGA congress will find enough states to ratify an elimination of that amendment.

So the question being asked everywhere, what’s next? Will Trump continue to try and violate the constitution? He seems to think he can do whatever he wants and U.S. law doesn't apply to him and his agenda. The same can be said for international law. Biden was a good example. Biden and the U.S. congress thumbed their noses at the ICC and the ICJ, threatening them with sanctions and even physical invasion if they were to arrest someone they were protecting. In this case, Netanyahu.

It's looking like the United States is in a fight for its very existence as a democracy. Will Trump attempt to ignore the very foundation that the country is built on? The better question, is whether the current congress and senate will go along with all of this? So far, the answer is yes, by one vote in the house and a few more in the senate.
One vote is all it took to confirm Pete Hegseth as the new secretary of defence and that came from the new Vice President. Will this be the new pattern going forward? Measures passed in the house by one vote from the Vice President?

As far as the senate is concerned, the MAGA people do have a majority there, and with a little help from some democrats, they have a fairly safe margin. People like Pennsylvania's Fetterman might as well be MAGA republicans, given the way they're voting these days. There is speculation that some of these folks will switch party affiliation sometime during the next couple of years ahead of the midterms. Wouldn't that throw a monkey wrench into the Washington political gears.

To add more fuel to the fire of chaos, Trump has let go of all of the federal employees who used to work for the government accountability agency. These inspector generals were the first of many on the list according to the report but this is now being challenged as violating federal law. Especially for senate appointees.

Imagine a Trump administration without any oversight? This promises to only get better and better from an entertainment perspective. And it’s only been a little over a week. What’s the U.S. or the world going to look like in a month? Six months? A year?

In another bit of little published news, another pro-Palestinian journalist has been arrested with no publicly stated charges, yet, in another European country. Ali Abunimah, the senior editor and one of the founders of Electronic Intifada, was arrested in Switzerland after he arrived to give a talk there last weekend. He was first detained for an hour as soon as he deplaned and then arrested last Sunday on vague charges related to speech related to terrorist organizations. After three days, he has now been released and deported, all for advocating for the Palestinians.

Of course, the U.S, state department will ignore this as if he doesn't exist. He is a native born, Palestinian-American citizen from Washington D.C. originally. Add this to the several other American, British and European journalists who were investigated, sometimes charged and those who were just killed outright and the American government did nothing but offer prayers of condolences for their losses, if that.

Like so many other pro-Palestinian journalists around the world in the last fifteen months, he's being persecuted for publicly supporting Palestinians and Hamas with his independent news show that's been around since 2001. Given how the American and western governments have treated journalists they don't like, his fate will be determined by the Swiss, not the U.S. The U.S. will probably not even acknowledge him as an American citizen because of his activism. He’s a persona non-grata these days.
This might be a lesson for all journalists and other activists who want to show support for the Palestinians these days. I say this as a neutral party here as this particular show could also be censored on certain platforms, like YouTube for instance, for the things I'm saying here. As a journalist in the world now, you have to be aware of what countries you wish to visit will do to you for being an active pro-Palestinian supporter, no matter the reason for that visit, before you decide to travel there.

This is an example of how the west will treat you if you dare to visit any of their countries. My advice, and I'm a nobody in the media world, if you advocate publicly for a free Palestine, do not physically visit any countries that are sympathetic to Israel, western Europe and the U.S. You will probably be arrested and charged with something. The U.K. and Germany are good examples, and you can now add Switzerland to that list. If you need to attend a conference to give a pro-Palestinian talk in western Europe, or the United States, do it remotely citing security concerns.

This is what democracy and freedom looks like in the west now. As I have said many times over the last few months, there are no first amendment rights anymore, in the U.S. and certain European countries. The right to freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and the freedom to peacefully protest against the government is very limited by these western governments now. In this case, as we have seen since October 7th, 2023, freedom of the press, speech and to protest have been severely suppressed by our so called, democratic governments when it comes to anything derogatory towards Israel. I expect this to only become worse under Trump's government going forward.

That’s all I have this week. Until next week, Sláinte
